I met a lady on a plane to Portland, Oregon last year who encouraged me to read a book called The Shack. We had an extensive discussion about life and God. So on landing, she thought the book was well worth reading and that it could significantly impact one’s life. Unfortunately, I have not had the time to read it yet. But I came across this post on Bible.org under the title The Shack: The Good, the Bad, and the Controversial.

In these times, it may be a good distraction from your problems and in the process, teach you something to help you deal with your own anger at God. I would be very interested in hearing your comments on this article and on the book.

Enjoy!

Below are my notes of a sermon by Pastor Stuart Johnson of Grace Community Church, Houston, Texas delivered on November 9, 2008. The information impacted me so, that I wanted to share it with you. My hope is that it will also bless you as it has me. Return to it over and over again to keep these principles fresh in your mind.

He Healed All Our Infirmities (Inadequacies)
Isaiah 53:4-5, Mat 8:16-18, 2 Cor 12:9-12

Infirmities – Sickness, diseases, anxiety (caused by feelings of inadequacy) Scriptural references: Phil 213, 4:13-, 1 Cor 1:26-31, Mark 11:22-26, 2 Kings 2:9-14 (Mantle – God’s grace)

Principles learned over a life-time of being placed by God in situations when I felt totally inadequate. When I asked myself, why me? When I exclaimed, “I’m not ready!”

God has chosen the weak to accomplish great things for His kingdom.

When God leads you to do something, God will provide the resources. Resources are not your problem. Your responsibility is to say YES.

Resources will be there when you need them, not before. It won’t happen until you get in the chair (your dreams and aspirations). Your dreams and aspirations are in the chair. God provides the grace for your current position. (Grace – Resources and accomplishments at Christ’s expense)

Don’t look too far into the future because you will get overwhelmed Mat 6:34.

God’s grace is like a coat. God gives grace (a coat) to a pastor at a particular church assignment. The coat stays at that position. God provides a new coat for your new chair. In between assignments, you will experience feelings of inadequacies. God provides grace for that too. It may not always feel like it. Nevertheless, it is still true.

Don’t compare yourself to others; their coat is a different size. Why am I this way? Why can’t I perform, relate, produce, speak like someone else you admire? Each coat is a different size. God can give you a coat that fits you perfectly!

What you must do is give God your talents and gifts (even yourself) to be used for His glory. And watch God work!

We began a very limited distribution in Charlotte, NC in September 2008. On our next visit to that city in the spring, we hope to multiply our distribution many folds. We expect to begin distribution in Houston by December 1st, in the vicinity of FM 1960 and Veterans Memorial.

Our hope is that Jesus will use this CD to reach our target audience – the unchurched and the unbeliever. We would love to hear about its impact or lack of impact on your life or the lives of your family and friends. So be generous and share it with them, won’t you?

It has been more than eight months since my last post on the subject of Church 101. During this time, we have visited several churches, attending some for an extended period. The primary purpose of our visits was to observe how these churches see their mission based on the way they practice church. We have learned a great deal.

Tradition seems to be the overriding theme in most of the churches we have visited. In other words, what is being done in these churches is based on what has been done in the past. While I am not in favor of throwing out our past for the simple reason that it is old and this is the twenty-first century, I am concerned that the picture I see in the Scriptures isn’t always being carried out.

It is not my intent to be critical for the purpose of being critical. But my heart and my Bible are telling me that God has called His church to a much higher purpose than that I am observing. And if we were in a war, and we are, at this stage, we would be losing big time, especially as it regards many of our traditional churches. Look around you. Look at the older churches. What is happening to them?

Here is a thought. Admittedly, I have not researched this. But I suspect that history will bear me out. A hundred years ago, in these united states, we were substantially Christian. Fifty years ago, one would be hard pressed to find those who said they did not believe in God. In those days, we had daily prayer in our homes. We had daily prayer at school and after school events. God, as a reality, was a foregone conclusion.

But to day, here in the twenty-first century, we are more enlightened. Therefore, those things are no longer true. The paradigm under which many of our old churches were created is no longer viable. We have a new culture, a new environment to contend with. Change is occurring so rapidly that many of us are being left behind. And with this new culture must come a fresh perspective. It is time we went back to the church authority – the Bible – to find this fresh perspective.

I call it fresh because it is not new. It is what we have heard from the beginning. But some how it has lost favor with us. Take a look at Luke 19:10 and Matthew 28:16-20. Now meditate on Ephesians 4:11-16. If you are a Bible student, you will note right away that this latter passage deals specifically with spiritual gifts. And most likely you have your own understanding of this passage. But I urge you to read it again, for the first time, and answer this question: “What is the purpose of these gifts?”

Have you lost hope already? As you look at the rest of today, are you feeling like you don’t care if you live to see tomorrow or not? No. You’re not thinking about suicide. But if you died today, that would be OK. You wish it would all just go away? If you could only have some peace. As you ponder your next move, there is only a blur, an emptiness, a blank space out front. Yet you can find hope, if you know where to look.

You haven’t been feeling well all week, not physically, but emotionally. You don’t know just when it all started. But this past week, it has pounced on you like an angry bear! And it won’t let go. You have tried to drink it away or drug it away, or sex it away, or sleep it away. But nothing, and I mean nothing, you have done has put even a single dent in it. As a matter of fact, everything you have done seems to make matters worst. Oh! It helps for a short while. But when it wears off, or when it is over, you are an even worst emotional wreck than before.

Now it is two o’clock in the morning. You can’t sleep. There’s no one to call. No one you want to call. So you ask the “Why” questions of yourself: Why is this happening to me? Why is my life such a mess? Why can’t I find some peace? You consider your best friend. “She’s happy. You never hear her complaining!” You look at your buddy. “He’s always smiling, cheerful, Mr. Happy-go-lucky. Why can’t I be like that? Oh God!!”

What did you say? Whose name did you just call? God? But why? Why did you even say that name? Do you know anything about Him? Is this just a common term you use in your disgust? Or do you think there may be a God out there somewhere and it would be nice to hear from Him about now?

Scripture tells us that GOD IS LOVE. If He is love, how can He do anything but love us? And the love of God was made known to us in that God sent His only begotten Son into the world that we might live through Him. Think about that for a moment. God loves YOU so much, that He became a man so He could remove the curse and entice you to seek Him. And for what reason does He want you to seek Him? Is it that He might want to pour His love into your life as well? Yes for that reason! God loves you with a love you have never even thought about, never even knew existed, let alone experienced. And right now, He is waiting for you to come to the end of your rope, to the realization that nothing in this world can alleviate, dispel, your sorrow. If you would only admit you’re hopeless. You need His help. Your only hope is in Him!

Jesus, the Son of God, is wooing you right now. He is saying to you right now, “Come unto Me you who are burden and heavy laden, and I will give you rest. I will give you peace.” You already know nothing else you have tried has worked. And now there is a voice in your head screaming that this God thing is silly, its foolishness! Don’t listen to it. It’s the voice of the deceiver. His number one objective is to keep you from God. It is the deceiver who keeps telling you to try this and try that, anything but “Try God”. Don’t listen to that voice.

There is another voice, a still, quiet voice saying, “I am the way, I am the truth, I am the life”. But you may not hear Him until you become still, and quiet, and expectant. Listen to this voice. Ask Jesus to come into your heart, to give you peace, to give you a new hope. “If you are real Jesus, be real to me!” “If you are real, please be real to me!! Yes. It may sound silly. But what have you to lose? Don’t think about anything else. Just say the words out loud and expect Him to act. See also Four Steps To God.

The Lord bless you, and keep you: The Lord make His face shine upon you, and be gracious unto you: The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

In Luke chapter 19, we find the story of Zaccheus, a Jew and a chief tax collector for the Roman government. Tax collectors were considered to be chief sinners, without a doubt. Yet Jesus walked directly to Zaccheus and said “…today I must stay at your house”. And when the crowd saw it, they began to grumble saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” Zaccheus told the Master that if he has defrauded anyone, he would give back to them four times as much. As a result, Jesus said, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke chapter 19, verse 10). Of course this event occurred well before the crucifixion.

At the end of the book of Matthew, in chapter 28, beginning at verse 18, we read “And Jesus came up and spoke to them [His eleven disciples], saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo I am with you always…”

In the Luke passage, Jesus states clearly why He has come to earth – “to seek and to save that which was lost.” The event in Matthew occurs well after His resurrection and shortly before His ascension to return to the Father. In other words, In Matthew, these were the last words Jesus spoke to the disciples. Since Jesus had told His disciple that He was going to build His church, through them of course, and since these were the last instructions given, according to the Matthew account, these instructions must have special significance to the work and purpose of the church.
